GOOD NEWS FOR TODAYAfter an unexpected surge in 2007, the number of law enforcement officers killed in the United States plummeted 41 percent during the first six months of this year, reaching the lowest level in more than four decades, the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund (NLEOMF) and Concerns of Police Survivors (COPS) have announced. The groups’ preliminary data show 59 officers died between January 1 and June 30, 2008. The last time the mid-year total was that low was 1965, when there were 55 line-of-duty deaths. By comparison, 100 law enforcement officers died in the line of duty during the first six months of 2007. That was the highest six-month total since 1978. By the end of 2007, a total of 181 law enforcement officers had lost their lives in the line of duty, which was 20 percent higher than the previous year, This year’s decline has been driven by substantial reductions in all types of officer deaths, especially fatal shootings. The number officers shot and killed declined 45 percent, from 38 during the first half of 2007 to 21 this year. That was the lowest gunfire death total since 1960, when there were 18 such fatalities. Texas, with seven, experienced the most law enforcement officer fatalities during the first half of 2008. California had five fatalities, followed by Georgia, with four, and Ohio and Oklahoma, with three each. Twenty-six states and the U.S. Virgin Islands experienced officer fatalities between January 1 and June 30. Four members of federal law enforcement also died during this time period.

Happy 4th Of July Weekend
Thursday 07-03-2008 8:15am ET

We have lots of 4th of July info for you to digest today. Really hope you guys have a wonderful and safe holiday. If you are headed out of town, please be careful and return safely. Here's what's happening for the 4th.
GETTING READY FOR THE 4TH Click Here for a site dedicated to the art of pyrotechnics and contains all sorts of information about consumer and professional fireworks. Learn how you can make your display look more professional. They cover a wide range of topics that can help the novice use consumer fireworks safely.
BEING SAFE ON THE 4TH OF JULY
For most Americans, the Fourth of July celebration is a time for food, fun and fireworks. But in 2007 nearly 10,000 Americans were treated in emergency rooms for firework-related injuries. According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, 64% of these injuries occurred during the one month period surrounding the July 4th holiday. A review of these injuries shows that burns were the most common, accounting for more than half of the incidents. The parts of the body most often injured were hands (2,000 injuries), eyes (1,400 injuries) and legs (1,200 injuries). To reduce injuries, CPSC recommends these fireworks safety tips:
· Never allow young children to play with or ignite fireworks. · Make sure fireworks are legal in your area before buying or using them. · Avoid buying fireworks that come in brown paper packaging, as this can be a sign that the fireworks were made for professional displays and could pose a danger to consumers. · Adults should always supervise fireworks activities. Parents often don’t realize that there are many injuries from sparklers to children under five. Sparklers burn at temperatures of about 2,000 degrees – hot enough to melt some metals. · Um, never have any portion of your body directly over a fireworks device when lighting the fuse. Move back a safe distance immediately after lighting.
· Never try to re-light or pick up fireworks that have not fully detonated. · Never point or throw fireworks at another person. · Keep a bucket of water or a garden hose handy in case of fire. · Never carry fireworks in a pocket or shoot them off in metal or glass containers.
TRAVEL SAFELY THIS WEEKEND
AAA estimates a decline in the number of Americans traveling during the Fourth of July holiday travel period. However, 40.45 million Americans will still travel during the July 4th holiday weekend, down 1.3%, or nearly 550,000 Americans from last year. Other findings: · More than 13% of the U.S. population will be on the road this holiday weekend despite record gas prices. · More than 34.2 million Americans (almost 85% of all holiday travelers) intend to travel by automobile.
· Approximately 4.54 million Americans (11% of holiday travelers) expect to travel by airplane. · Nearly 1.7 million plan to travel by train, bus or other mode of transportation. · Automobile travelers across much of the country will have to contend with gas prices at or above $4 a gallon. The national average for self-serve regular is $4.07 a gallon. That’s 13 cents a gallon more than last month and $1.09 a gallon more than a year ago.
BE SAFE AND LEGAL THIS HOLIDAY WEEKEND
As Independence Day approaches, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives wants to remind the public to exercise caution when dealing with fireworks and only purchase legal fireworks through licensed retailers. Illegal explosive devices meet neither the safety nor quality standards of legally-manufactured consumer fireworks. Federally banned fireworks include M-80s, M-1000s, Silver Salutes and Cherry Bombs. Mail-order kits designed to build these fireworks also are banned. The manufacture, sale, and receipt of these illegal explosives can result in federal felony and misdemeanor charges. The public is urged to report the manufacture or sale of illegal fireworks or explosive devices to local law enforcement or to ATF by calling 1-888-ATF-BOMB (1-888-283-2662). BOTTOMS UP!
Celebrating our nation’s independence is a time-honored tradition, typically marked by barbeques, fireworks and a cold beer. Last year, July 4th was the biggest beer-selling holiday of the year, with beer sales at supermarkets across the country topping 23 million cases during the holiday period, according to The Nielsen Company. Beer sales during this period also accounted for approximately 5.2% of total annual beer sales in 2007. Rising sales of beer are contributing to the U.S. economy – nearly $190 billion, in fact. According to a study by the Beer Institute and the National Beer Wholesalers Association, the beer industry also contributes more than 1.7 million jobs paying almost $55 billion in wages annually. The production of beer helps support other segments of the economy as well, including more than $4 billion in economic contributions for the agricultural sector.
